Preparing for the New Year
Today is Friday. In Greek that means the Day of Preparation. You never hear Friday referred to as the day of preparation unless it is Holy Week. That doesn’t mean the day still doesn’t have a purpose. In the ‘office’ workers are preparing for to make sure the company won’t ‘go under’ over the weekend. Families are preparing for time spent together. Even if we are not Jews preparing for Sabbath, we still spend Friday preparing. Today, I invite you to prepare for the New Year.
Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve, and just about everyone will be making New Year resolutions. I invite you to do the same, but not for the same purpose. While resolutions about eating habits and family time are important, I’m inviting you to consider more eternal consequences in your resolutions. I invite you to prepare to make 2023 the year you take your faith more seriously than 2022, or any other year you have lived.
Here are some things to consider in your preparations for the New Year…
- Read the Bible more
- Fast more
- Pray more
- Serve the poor more
- Receive Holy Communion more
- Go to Holy Confession more
- Attend Divine Liturgy more
- Attend other Church services more
- Incorporate your local church schedule into your family calendar
- Consider the needs of your local church when you plan your finances
