Are You Ready for the End?
All eyes were on the football field last night as a player suffered cardiac arrest on the field after a powerful tackle. As of the writing of this blog, he is in critical condition, the game has been suspended, and the sports world is praying. That is good. It occurred to me this morning to ask, “Are you ready for the end?”
This young man went to work yesterday thinking he would return home after the game. He isn’t alone. First responders, our military, and every other person does the same every day. For some, though, today will be their last day. For you, today might be your last day.
I don’t write this to churn up emotions of fear and Armageddon. Instead, I just want us to remember, we don’t know how much time we have. We need to live, as the Church teaches, like today is our last day. It might be our last do to repent, to pray, to forgive and be forgiven.
TIMOTHY, my son, always be steady, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your ministry. For I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
2nd Timothy 4.5-8
Saint Paul was ready, and he encouraged Saint Timothy, and be default us, to be fulfil our ministry and be ready as well. The crown of righteousness is waiting for us, but only if we spend today in repentance and forgiveness. As our New Year Resolutions are still fresh in our minds, let’s include “Be Ready for the End” as our #1 Resolution.
