The Pain of Violence

Last night the world was witness to yet another example of political violence. This is something the world has known for centuries, millennia even. Since the first murder of Abel by his brother, humanity has known the unfortunate reality of violence.

When Jesus came to bring us a better example of peace and love He warned, “For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” (Matthew 24.7)

The temptation is to watch the news last night with a level of joy that one regime is being ‘held back’ by another ‘more peaceful’ regime. As Christians we can never watch violence with anything other than shame and sorrow.

Christians are shamed by violence because our brothers and sisters continue in the spirit of Cain VS Abel. We have sorrow because another human life has been lost in the name of peace. Peace cannot be found through violence.

I understand that violence sometimes cannot be avoided. That does not mean it is justified. It must always be unavoidable for Christians. I cannot speak as to whether last night’s violence was necessary or not. I can speak about the pain it brings to my heart.

Saint Paul commanded us, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.” (Romans 12.18) Jesus Christ is the King of Peace and we are His servants. We must always, until there is no other option, be peacemakers. It is our duty as Christians.

As we watch with shock today and wonder what will come of last night’s attack, I invite you to spend the day in prayer for peace. Use the reality of political violence in the world to be an inspiration to heal wounds between you and your neighbors.

Become a peacemaker in every possible relationship “as much as depends on you.” It was the peace of God that conquered the Roman Empire. It will be the peace of God that heals the global conflicts of our times.

For peace in the world and for the salvation of our souls, let us pray to the Lord.
