Blessed Month

One of the sweet traditions of the Greek culture is the custom of wishing people a “Blessed Month” or Καλό Μίνα in Greek. This custom isn’t just empty words, but a prayer that is influenced by the traditions of the Church.

During the Byzantine Empire it was customary for the clergy and people to process to the local well on the first day of each month following Divine Liturgy. There, the Blessing of the Water would take place, asking for God’s blessing upon the people and city for the coming month.

The tradition has fallen away in modern times, mainly because of indoor plumbing I would guess, but the tradition of monthly blessing of the waters is making a ‘comeback’ throughout the Orthodox world.

If your particular church does not offer this custom, I invite you to say a special prayer at your home altar and drink from the holy water you keep in your home. A small sip is all you need. If your church does offer this service, then try to attend.

So, since today is the first day of July, and somewhere there is a blessing of the water taking place, asking God to bless our time, we wish all our fans a Blessed Month. May God bless you and your journey to theosis.
