Procrastination is Your Enemy

Many people ‘work well under pressure’ to accomplish their tasks waiting for the fast-approaching deadline before getting down to business. One of the reasons committee meetings are effective is because people tend to work based on deadlines. It may even get our juices flowing, and jump start our creativity. That may work well in the secular world, but when it comes to salvation, waiting for deadline is worst thing we can do.

When we treat our salvation with the same procrastination that we treat our secular job performance, we risk our salvation, not because we’re not willing to ‘put in the work’ necessary, but because in truth we do not know the deadline. Take a moment and read today’s Gospel lesson.

The Lord said, “Watch, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. Therefore you also must be ready; for the Son of man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Who then is the faithful and wise servant whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master when he comes will find so doing. Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions.” – Matthew 24.42-47

If we are waiting for the deadline before starting the work of preparing our soul for heaven, the chances are more than good that we will fail in our ‘performance review’ when we are face to face with God. Without warning God will come to judge us, and then it will be too late. There won’t be any benefit to being good under pressure once judgement day comes. “Watch, for you do NOT KNOW…,” says the Lord.

It won’t matter what intentions we had to get started once we’re ready. Our job is to be ready, and procrastination will be our enemy. God will say, “Didn’t I warn you? Didn’t I tell you to expect Me when you least expect Me? Didn’t I make Myself clear?” These will be the words of judgment if we hear them.

Today is the day to begin! If you need a deadline, think of today as the deadline. In truth, we don’t know if we have tomorrow. Let’s face it, we don’t even know if we have tonight. Lord have mercy! Don’t put off for tomorrow what your soul needs today, and your soul needs repentance and love and grace. None of these can be found in your secular world. They are found in Church. God is waiting for you today.
