Holy Week Favorites

Once each month I attend a Orthodox Men’s Breakfast. Today was our May breakfast, during which I asked what everyone’s ‘favorite thing’ about Holy Week was. Everyone answered differently, as would be expected, but all were moved by some aspect of Holy Week. For centuries the Church has gathered us, and each village/city/island/country has their own unique Holy Week Traditions that make the week special for everyone. I even have my favorite.

It is no secret if you are a regular fan of Be Transfigured Ministries, that I love the liturgical services of the Church. It is what makes us unique in the world of Christianity. Sure, our theology differs from the other 43,000+ denominations, but the theology is what drives our liturgical life, and the liturgical life is our outward expression of our theology, and love for the Lord. My ‘favorite thing’ about Holy Week is more than just the services.

What brings me exceeding joy is to watch OTHERS experience Holy Week. To watch OTHERS spend the week as a spiritual pilgrimage, and attend services each night following the final days of Christ’s earthly ministry, inspires me in my ministry. Watching the progress of pious believers gather in dark, quiet Churches night after night, genuinely praying until finally they experience the exceeding joy of the glorious Resurrection of Our Lord, nourishes my soul. It is my ‘favorite thing’ from Holy Week.

There is only one more thing that could make my Holy Week ‘better’ year after year, but I won’t experience that aspect of Holy Week for another few weeks. My true favorite would be for just one person to have such a profound Holy Week experience that inspire them to Live A New Life In Christ. If Holy Week, with all the cultural and sacred traditions, does not change our life, then it is only theater. That is my true favorite…..new lives.

May our Risen Lord inspire you to Live A New Life In Christ.
