God Chooses You

So, you’ve made your New Year Resolutions and now you’re wondering how to go about making them ‘come true’ before it’s too late. You plan for success. You write little reminder notes all over to keep you on track. Only one thing is missing. Is it what God wants for you?

We try so hard to make ourselves ‘better people’ that we forget what ‘better’ even means. What is better for world standards might not be better for God. He may and often does want something totally different for us than we want for ourselves. It is God’s choice, not ours.

It isn’t that God doesn’t want us to be ‘better’ people. He wants us to be more kind, more peaceful, more charitable, more forgiving, and more faithful. All these make us ‘better’ people in the world and in the sight of God. If your resolutions don’t align with God’s choices, think again.

Brethren, one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee”; as he says also in another place, “Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek.” In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard for his godly fear. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Hebrews 5.4-10

What Saint Paul helps us understand is that we are not the ones who decide to create honor, whether we are ‘better’ or not. It solely God’s choice if we are honored, no matter what our New Year Resolution says. We don’t get to choose our standing with others. God does.

If that means having to rethink your New Year Resolutions, today is as good a day as yesterday was. It is defiantly better than waiting until tomorrow, or later. This is the year to choose to put God first, since God chooses you. Honor Him and will honor you, whether the world knows it or not.
