Limited by Love

When we are faced with a choice, we can either use our mind or our heart to inform our decision. Truth be told, our heart always wins in the long run. We often make choices that our minds know are wrong ‘just because’ our heart is set.

When we say, “My heart is set…” it no longer matters what makes sense. It no longer matters what is good for us. The only thing that matters is to please our heart in the moment. This is why Saint Paul warns us that we are restricted by our affections.

Brethren, our mouth is open to you, Corinthians; our heart is wide. You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted in your own affections. In return — I speak as to children — widen your hearts also. Do not be mismated with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God, as God said.

2nd Corinthians 6.11-16

Although this passage is about marriage, we can learn a far greater lesson by paying attention to what we love. Take a moment and reflect on your recent choices. Did you follow what you love, as your heart told you, or did you say, “My heart isn’t in this right now.”

Our spiritual journey is all about what we love. Here are some examples.

  • Do we love God more than eating meat on Wednesday and Friday?
  • Do we love God more than sleeping in on the ‘only’ day of the week we get a chance?
  • Do we love God more than ourselves?

We say we love God, but every time we are faced with choosing Him ahead of something else, our heart reveals our true love. We restrict our spiritual growth not because we don’t want to be with God. We restrict our growth because we love ourselves more than we love God.

If you are wondering if you love something more than God, go back and ask yourselves again. Do you love God more? Then the choice is easy to make. You won’t ever regret choosing God if you love God. If you love anything else, the choice becomes much harder to make.

What do you love more?
