Great Compline Prayer Three
Not every prayer is long, but every prayer is important. The shortest prayer is only one word, Amen. Some prayers are so long we struggle to remain attentive. Our Daily Lenten Journey has been reviewing all sorts of prayers, long and short. Today’s prayer isn’t long, but it is powerful.
O Master God, Father Almighty, only begotten Son, Lord Jesus Christ, and Holy Spirit: One Godhead, One Power, have mercy on me, a sinner, and in your knowing ways save me, your unworthy servant; for you are blessed unto the ages of ages.
This prayer reads more like a creed than a prayer. Offering this prayer is our way of confessing our belief in One God, Father-Son-Holy Spirit. It is our way of telling anyone who will listen that our God, The God, knows everything and is still willing to be merciful to us.
Think about this for a moment. God already knows everything we have done. We don’t ‘have’ to confess to Him, but He loves us so much He waits for our confession to comfort us and forgive us. He won’t even force His forgiveness upon us. That is love.
At the same time, He has already forgiven us. Long before we were born, He took on humanity and committed to save us from death. He holds nothing against us, so why do we hold so much against ourselves? Why do we refuse to come to Him and confess our heart to Him?
If we have gained nothing else from our 2025 Daily Lenten Journey on Prayer, I pray we could learn to trust that God will be on our side each and every time we come to Him. He will never take the side of the devil and sin. That is the bold statement in today’s prayer.
God in His complete knowledge and power still blesses us. I want you to remember that every time you pray. Happy praying.
