Christian Generosity
We live in a society that rewards generosity. Donors receive marble plaques, street names, and publicity. Even buildings are named for donors, often as incentive for wealthy people to give. As Christians our generosity is something different. Christian generosity expects nothing in return.
When was the last time you gave anything without getting anything in return? Even holiday giving has become about giving AND getting. Many times, we give ‘just because’ someone has already given to us. Either way, we are still ‘getting’ something for our gift.
Brethren, whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Slaves, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in singleness of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever your task, work heartily, as serving the Lord and not men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you are serving the Lord Christ. For the wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong he has done, and there is no partiality. Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
Colossians 3:17-25; 4:1
Considering today’s lesson from Saint Paul’s Letter to the Colossians, giving is more than money. Giving is a state of our heart. We give because we love God, or at least that is why we should give. It might be money, loyalty, or time, but it should always be for God.
As we approach the Holiday Season, our attention will naturally turn toward giving. This year I invite you to give thanks to God first and foremost. Let your giving to your local parish, to other worthy charities, or even Be Transfigured Ministries, be an expression of your love for God.
Don’t wait for your name to go up in lights. Don’t brag to your friends about your generosity. Prayerfully and quietly and most of all in love, give to say thanks to God. God will know your gift and God will take care of whatever recognition we deserve.
