2026 Daily Lenten Journey Day 35 – Nothing God Won’t Forgive

Today we find ourselves on the edge of the final week of Great Lent and the story of extreme repentance. The Fifth Sunday of Lent commemorates the life and repentance of Saint Mary of Egypt. She was a woman that can teach a lot about repentance, if we have the right heart.

She spent more years in repentance as she did in sin, spending forty-seven years living in desert isolation. Her holiness in repentance is evidenced by wild animals tending to her needs, even helping bury her upon her death. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America says this about today’s commemoration to inspire us.

Since the end of the holy Forty Days is drawing nigh, it has been appointed for this day also, so that if we think it hard to practice a little abstinence forty days, we might be roused by the heroism of her who fasted in the wilderness forty-seven years.

The past five weeks of Great Lent have had only one purpose. The Church has been calling us to a life of repentance and devotion to God. With examples from the Publican and Pharisee so many weeks ago to the life of Saint Mary of Egypt, one thing remains a common thread.

There is no sin that God won’t forgive in repentance. The Publican, the Prodigal and now the Prostitute are all examples of real sinners changing their lives for God, and being forgiven by God. They are all examples of God’s love for us in repentance.

Don’t ever think you are beyond God’s love and forgiveness. If He will forgive Saint Mary of Egypt, He will forgive you. All He requests is a life of repentance and devotion. You don’t even have to move to the desert. You only have to change your heart.
